As we all know backlinks are one of the best forms of SEO.

The more links to your website, the higher Google ranks your website's importance.

So actually, when we link to other websites from our website we're helping out their Search Engine Optimisation by giving them some of our Google rank.

This doesn't have to be the case.

With use of the rel="nofollow" attribute with an <a> tag element we can instruct Google not to follow that link, and so not give the destination website any of our Google page rank link juice.

Although we are stopping the destination website from benefiting from our good Google page rank link juice, we are still helping out the destination website by providing it with traffic if people click on the link.

So to finish, here's an example of how to implement the rel="nofollow" attribute:
